How to Pray?
Prayer is the place where a child of God must spend a lot of time. When a child of God is praying – it means the child is in the secret place of the most high.
But how should one pray?
Prayer should not be some random need or want being put across to God.
Prayer should be according to the word of God: Proverbs 28:9 'One who turns away his ear from hearing the law, Even his prayer is an abomination.'
Zechariah 7:11-13 '“But they refused to heed, shrugged their shoulders, and stopped their ears so that they could not hear. Yes, they made their hearts like flint, refusing to hear the law and the words which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. Thus great wrath came from the Lord of hosts. Therefore it happened, that just as He proclaimed and they would not hear, so they called out and I would not listen,” says the Lord of hosts. '
Prayer should be from a purified heart: Psalms 66:18-19 'If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear. But certainly, God has heard me; He has attended to the voice of my prayer.'
Jesus teaches us the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13 'In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.'
In the Lord’s Prayer we find the template for how one should pray.
· The prayer must give glory to God and His Holy Name.
· The prayer should submit to the will of God – Not the fulfilment of a want / need in your way.
· The Prayer should seek forgiveness for any iniquity in the heart.
Just the wants/needs petition is not the right prayer. But should we not ask God for our wants and needs? We should but the priority should be on purifying the heart, submitting to God’s will and glorifying Him. Because the Bibel says “ Seek ye first the Kingdom of God”. And the wants and needs will be given for He knows what we need. Even the Lord’s prayer contains the ask for daily bread and protection from evil. The thing is in the order of priority in our prayer.
The Bible warns in Proverbs 15:8 'The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, But the prayer of the upright is His delight.'. If you have wickedness in your heart and pray – it is an abomination to the Lord. So, learn to develop an upright heart, so that your prayer is a delight to the Lord.
Praise the Lord!
Glory to Jesus.
